You'll not find prigs at the annual Las Cruces Renaissance Craftfaire this November, but you'll find plenty of good, clean fun.
Perhaps a few jugglers, a few mimes, a few armored knights engaged in combat, surely a few jesters. But no prigs. You'll probably encounter a wench hawking flowers or cookies in her best Eliza Doolittle accent, "Hey, lye-dee. Buy a cookie frum a poor gel. Just 50 cents. 'Taint much tapie."
To usher in the chile season, Hatch hosts the Labor Day Chile Festival. The venue is split between downtown and the airstrip, two miles west on Highway 26. The lively festival draws thousands of tourists from around the world and features a chili cook-off, arts and crafts galore, two-steppin' music, sidewalk sales, chile eats and products, and a parade led by the newly crowned Ms. Chile. The blue skies over Elephant Butte Lake will be dotted with CFO's (colorful flying objects) during the weekend of April 21-22, 2001. Hot air balloons and kites will soar into the sky early Saturday morning, weather permitting, and will repeat their colorful performance early Sunday morning. Put on your cowboy hat and working pair of boots to celebrate the Old West's restaurant on the range the chuckwagon. Betcha there will be no microwave ovens in the infield of the Ruidoso Downs Race Track on New Mexico Highway 70 where 40 cowboy cookin' teams will compete over open fires for a large purse for their beef, beans, potatoes, biscuit and dessert creations. Judges points are swayed by authenticity. This competition is the hottest in the West. Imagine this staggering grocery list: 750 pounds of stone ground corn, 175 gallons of vegetable oil, 75 gallons of red chile, 175 pounds of grated cheese, and 50 pounds of onion. Well, chile lovers, this is what it takes to conjure up the world's largest enchilada, which you can watch being prepared and then devour at the culmination of The Whole Enchilada Festival (TWEF) on Sunday, October 3 in the Las Cruces Downtown Mall. For most, Labor Day weekend in Hillsboro means Apple Festival - apple pie, arts, crafts, antiques and three days of fun on the banks of the Percha River. But for some like Sue Bason of Sue's Antiques and Bonnie Guess of Kingston's Camp Shiloh, the weekend also carries memories of a roaring wall of water - "like a freight train" - that hit town at midnight on Saturday during the 1972 Apple Festival.
The deadly flood killed four, washed away seven businesses, destroyed 13 homes, damaged countless others, left behind $750,000 in loss and damages, and, as Sue dryly puts it, "ended the festival right then that year."
I'm awakened at 5 in the morning by the sound of gunfire.
No, it's not some gang bangers blasting away in the dark, nor even hunters harrying doves; it's something entirely different, my neighbors in nearby Tortugas pueblo beginning their dawn ceremony in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
